Sons of Justice 4: Her Beasts of Burden
Sam is fighting for a better life and a new start. Her beast of burden stands in her way, but she will do what is necessary to finally be happy once and for all. She doesn’t count on falling in love with Reeves, Tiny, Big John, and Flint, and certainly doesn’t count on her sister's betrayal nearly costing her everything.
Soon she realizes that love, support, and being a family isn’t a one way street, and those she thought were just friends turn out to be better then her own family, more trustworthy and loving. As she begins her new life, happiness is in her grasp. Her defenses are down, the walls, too, and that’s when her enemies strike, leaving her once again a victim of their jealousy and control.

DEDICATION
Dear readers,
Thank you for purchasing this legal copy of Her Beast of Burdens. Life can be filled with various types of burdens. How we handle them, battle against them, eventually overcome them, is up to each and every one of us. Sam is no different, except her burdens are truly not her own, but brought on by family, by problems they caused, and these burdens keep her from being free. They keep Sam from accepting change, happiness, and moving on to succeed in the life she has struggled to maintain, to not be like her mother or sister. To not be victims, drug addicts, simple minded with no direction, no desire to get better, to be better and succeed in life.
As things get worse and worse and she truly suffers as a result of her sister and her mother’s actions, she realizes that she can fight no more to make them see the light, the right path to follow. Not if her sister keeps dating an abusive, controlling soldier beating her on a regular basis, and not her drug-addicted mother who has caused Sam the debt she must pay.
Ultimately it takes the kind, compassionate words, actions and persistence of four men to make Sam see that she deserves better. That she deserves to be loved, to achieve her dreams, to be rid of the burdens in her life that are not her own.
May you enjoy her journey. For when you have a heart as big and caring as Sam’s, letting go, being strong and focusing on herself, which is something she never did before, can be empowering, but also very dangerous.
Happy reading,
HUGS!
Dixie
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
People seem to be more interested in my name than where I get my ideas for my stories from. So I might as well share the story behind my name with all my readers.
My momma was born and raised in New Orleans. At the age of twenty, she met and fell in love with an Irishman named Patrick Riley Dwyer. Needless to say, the family was a bit taken aback by this as they hoped she would marry a family friend. It was a modern day arranged marriage kind of thing and my momma downright refused.
Being that my momma’s families were descendants of the original English speaking Southerners, they wanted the family blood line to stay pure. They were wealthy and my father’s family was poor.
Despite attempts by my grandpapa to make Patrick leave and destroy the love between them, my parents married. They recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
I am one of six children born to Patrick and Lynn Dwyer. I am a combination of both Irish and a true Southern belle. With a name like Dixie Lynn Dwyer it’s no wonder why people are curious about my name.
Just as my parents had a love story of their own, I grew up intrigued by the lifestyles of others. My imagination as well as my need to stray from the straight and narrow made me into the woman I am today.
Enjoy Her Beasts of Burden and allow your imagination to soar freely.

Prologue
Sam Coyle was on her hands and knees scrubbing the floors in the kitchen. Her sister was feeding the baby, six-month-old Evan. She didn’t want to be here. She was angry as she scrubbed, being sure the floor was spotless as Jerry expected it. Why was she doing this? Why? She scrubbed harder and then looked toward the living room and the couch where her sister, Cass, sat holding the baby, feeding him. Her face was battered and bloody, eye swollen shut, and she looked pitiful. Tears stung Sam’s eyes, and a realization hit her of why she was here. Her sister needed her. Jerry had a hold on Cass, as well as on Sam now that she had her mother’s debt and had gotten help from him, financial help, which landed her in debt to the prick bastard.
A debt she was close to paying off. One she would have already paid off if the prick wasn’t so anal and hung up on perfection and cleanliness. She stood up, her knees and legs aching, especially after she’d worked at Cotton John’s, an upscale bar thirty minutes from here. It had been a long fucking night, but she made five hundred bucks. Half would go to pay Jerry when the prick showed up. She needed five thousand more. She could do it. She would get it. She just needed to be patient. It didn’t help that every couple of weeks or so he would knock Cass around and then Cass wouldn’t be able to keep up with the baby or the housework. A vicious cycle.
She stared at Cass, who was smiling at the baby and talking to him, and it was so fucked up to see her sister looking battered and beaten and know it had been done by the father of the baby who so innocently looked up into his mother’s eyes, one of them swollen? Would the baby be so used to it that he would think a battered mother was normal? None of this was normal. Why couldn’t she get her sister to
leave Jerry? Why did Cass love him so? When their cousin Amanda had visited a couple of weeks back, even she tried to get Cass to leave with her and head up north. No such luck.
She shouldn’t talk. Sam had dated Vinny for several months and thought he was amazing. When he broke her heart cheating on her, she was done with men, but he knew about her sister and about Jerry because they were friends. The group of them thought they could do whatever they wanted. They were military men, men now involved in different things she really didn’t understand or know about. It was secretive, but their abilities and the techniques used to keep them safe, alive, and as weapons against enemies on their missions were used against women—to possess them, keep them under control and submissive—and Sam refused to go down the same path her sister had.
Vinny was not happy about the break-up despite being caught cheating on Sam. He called her often and stopped by Cotton John’s and flirted with her. He brought in groups of friends and even had men keeping eyes on her.
She started to wipe down the wood furniture with polish. The lemon scent attacked her nostrils, and she thought about a different life. About leaving this town and moving elsewhere. Her sister wasn’t going to leave Jerry like they’d discussed months ago. It just wasn’t going to happen. Now that Vinny was doing some official government jobs with Jerry, it made Sam more antsy to get out of here. He was making it a habit of showing up even here at the house with Jerry. She wanted a better life. A safer life. Her sister was older than her, and she chose to remain in this abusive relationship. She always had an excuse. Well, Sam didn’t make excuses. The first time Vinny struck her was the last time she gave him the opportunity. He cheated on her, she confronted him, and he got pissed when she walked out the door, flipping him off. When he grabbed her arm, yanked her back, and slapped her hard across the cheek, that was it for her. Her sister’s life flashed before her eyes, and she would be dammed to allow herself to be under the control and the hand of a man. Of any man ever.
It still hurt. The feelings of betrayal, of pain, of her heart breaking. She had done everything right, had been the perfect girlfriend and lover. Vinny was to blame, not her, and apparently he knew that and regretted it, but she wasn’t taking him back, not ever.
“Are you disappearing again this weekend?” her sister asked her as Sam finished up dusting. The place looked spotless. She prayed the dick was satisfied so her sister wouldn’t suffer.
“Not sure. I need to make some more money.”
“You’re almost paid up, right?”
“Five grand isn’t almost paid up.”
“Jerry said you can take your time. Vinny said not to worry about it.”
“Cass, are you that dense? Of course Vinny said not to worry about it. He wanted to pay Jerry the money and then have me owe it to him. I’ve severed my ties from Vinny, and that’s it. He needs to get over it.”
“He loves you though. He’s so handsome and big and strong. He adores you and so does his family.”
Sam rolled her eyes.
“Well, he should have thought about that before he cheated on me. He struck me, and I will never forgive him for that. I’m done with him,” she stated firmly.
“He won’t give up. He knows he screwed up.”
“Well, that’s great for him. Maybe the next time he dates a woman he will remain faithful if he learned his lesson.”
Sam wasn’t having this conversation with her sister. Her sister’s mind was warped, controlled by Jerry. She felt she was stuck and needed to accept this life. It was sad, but there was no talking to her. The reason Sam kept helping her like this was so that Cass wouldn’t get beaten. Her sister wasn’t going to change. It was sad, but it was the way it was.
“Maybe Mom has gotten some money and can help with the five thousand more,” Cass said, and Sam was shocked.
The bills were medical bills, money their mom owed the hospital for another long stay for getting high on drugs and breaking her arm and screwing up the car. A car that needed to be fixed in order for their mom to get back to work once her arm healed. That had been months ago, and she still wasn’t working. The bills were coming, and to make matters worse, their mom was seeing some dick loser who was feeding her drugs and talking to her about whisking her off to someplace.
“Get real, will you? She is as screwed up as they come. That guy she’s seeing is using her and filling her with drugs. I’d expect a call from the police about her being dead before I expect that woman to pay for her screw-ups. I’ll get the five grand and be done.”
She walked out of the room, no longer able to listen to the weak-mindedness of her sister who’d been brainwashed by Jerry. Her sister didn’t have bill collectors calling her cell phone and hounding her for money. Sam did. Cass didn’t even look at the mail. Sam did.
Here Sam was trying to live a good life and surround herself with good people. The weekends were hers to do just that. To pretend she could live a normal happy life in a place like Repose, surrounded by friends she adored, who had recently found themselves in danger. Cherokee, Bo, and Mercy were lucky to be alive. They got second chances, and Sam had to make her choices wise ones. The debt, caring for her sister stuck in an abusive relationship, not winding up like her mom or Cass, and keeping Vinny off her case and out of her life were all reasons why she had to keep working and keep fighting. Going into Repose to visit such a perfect town with caring great people was her fix, her drug, her addiction, her motivation to continue to fight. Once the debt was done, she could seriously think about leaving. Going into Repose to live was now not an option. Not after she drank a little too much and let Reeves kiss her. Jesus, she’d screwed up. But God, it felt so good.
She swallowed hard. She’d been down that path before, and the last thing she needed was another man or men, soldiers, of course, to ruin her life and give her more regrets. Plus, they did things in multiple in Repose, and the way Big John, Flint, and Tiny looked at her all the time, she knew they were interested. Which should totally freak her out. Big John and Tiny were each six feet four, had huge muscles, and looked psycho crazy. Flint looked just as big and bad but had a calmer demeanor and handsome face. No one knew what to expect from him, and Reeves, Jesus he was a player and then some. So tan and muscular, flirty and attentive. She’d gotten too comfortable, and then when he pressed close to her, inhaled her shampoo, and then began to hug her goodnight, that was it. With lips against her skin, she closed her eyes and tightened her hold, and he took it as an acceptance for more. So his lips found hers, and hot damn did they make out. Jesus, she almost let him feel her up.
She shook her head. A mistake she was not going to make again. She knew what needed to be done, and she would do it in order to survive and get out of this hellhole.
Her burdens to bear would keep her head out of her ass and her focus on having a better life and not winding up like her mother or Cass. That would be her focus.
Chapter One
Flint blew the whistle loudly, and the group of soldiers training took off running. The obstacle course was top-notch, and in a few days, they were opening up the large course for a fundraising event to raise money for wounded soldiers and their families. The weather was good, cold considering it was winter but perfect for challenging the soldiers and civilians entering the competition. This group of twenty men, his team, were challenging a few other teams for placement in the group competition. He felt his cell phone vibrate and glanced down to check out who it was.
He read the text, knowing that Big John was stationed farther ahead in the middle of the route to monitor the soldiers and push their times. Tiny was toward the end of the race, and Reeves at the completion line where the men would move right into push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks.
The guys are all going over to Channing and his team’s place later for pool, cards, and to watch some football. Want to go?
He thought about it. It was always fun to get together with the guys and just throw back a few beers and bullshit. More than likely Brea
ker and his team, as well as Spartan and the commanders, would be there. They’d hosted last weekend.
Sure thing. I’ll hit the store after work with Tiny.
He started walking through the course and catching up with the men, watching them doing the calisthenics while Big John, Tiny, and Reeves yelled at them like bad-ass instructors like to do.
One of the guys, Corbin, slipped as he went down to do ten more push-ups after screwing something up, and he landed on his face. Tiny chuckled. Corbin lay flat down, gasping for breath and moaning.
The rest of the group cheered and ended the training on a high note.
Tiny walked over to Corbin and bent down.
“Maybe next time you’ll think twice about pulling an all-nighter with some hot broad and a bottle of tequila the night before a killer training session, huh?” he said to him.
“Yes, sir,” Corbin said, and then Tiny shook his head.
“Get your ass up and go shower and get some rest. You’re in the competition, and we don’t want to look like a bunch of fucking pussies. Now move!” he yelled, and Corbin got up, kind of slowly, but then took off running but went right into a jog fifteen feet later.
“How did you know about the woman and his wild night?” Reeves asked.
“It’s my job to know,” he replied.
“He finds shit out because he loves to fuck with these men so they aren’t weak,” Big John stated.
They snickered.
“Well, he’ll probably do it again, you know that, right, Tiny?” Reeves asked.
