  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

  People seem to be more interested in my name than where I get my ideas for my stories from. So I might as well share the story behind my name with all my readers.

  My momma was born and raised in New Orleans. At the age of twenty, she met and fell in love with an Irishman named Patrick Riley Dwyer. Needless to say, the family was a bit taken aback by this as they hoped she would marry a family friend. It was a modern day arranged marriage kind of thing and my momma downright refused.

  Being that my momma’s families were descendants of the original English speaking Southerners, they wanted the family blood line to stay pure. They were wealthy and my father’s family was poor.

  Despite attempts by my grandpapa to make Patrick leave and destroy the love between them, my parents married. They recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

  I am one of six children born to Patrick and Lynn Dwyer. I am a combination of both Irish and a true Southern belle. With a name like Dixie Lynn Dwyer it’s no wonder why people are curious about my name.

  Just as my parents had a love story of their own, I grew up intrigued by the lifestyles of others. My imagination as well as my need to stray from the straight and narrow made me into the woman I am today.

  “Do you think I give a flying fuck what those assholes want? I don’t. I’m the leader now. Vocarious is dead and for good reason. He was a weak-minded fool who didn’t comply with our ideas, and our plans for this realm and our packs. He was old, set in his ways, and it was time for new leadership.”

  “I understand that, Roovio, I do. But remaining in mourning, transitioning into this position, will be key to gaining the respect and support of the people,” Burdough, his guard and right-hand man said to him.

  “Gain their respect? I’m the one to be shown respect, Burdough. They are “my” people now.” Roovio Gaines raised his voice and poked at his own chest.

  Burdough bowed his head to his Alpha. “Of course, they are your people now. I believe the ideas we discussed before Vocarious’s sudden accident should begin to be administered. Would you like me to proceed as planned?”

  Roovio looked at him, puffed out his massive chest, and squinted. “Yes. Begin with rearranging positions. I need to get to know my immediate staff and board. I will not look like a fool in front of the Syncrony or the others. I have a job to do. Set up a meeting for them to be addressed today.”

  “Today, sir?” he asked.

  Roovio looked at him, his eyes glowing ever so lightly, and his teeth clenched. “I want them in line quickly, and under my control. I will not go lightly on them as I expect immediate action when I command. Anyone questions me, you know what to do.”

  “But they are in mourning over the loss of their Alpha,” he whispered.

  “I’m their Alpha, and they will need to adjust to my rules and my orders. As I mentioned, if they don’t comply you know what to do. Bring Gazelle to me, as well,” he said, and licked his lips.

  The Alpha’s mate was an attractive woman, young, too, and she would help Roovio by accepting his claim of her body.

  Burdough nodded. “I will be sure to keep Ferdol close by.”

  “Very good.” Roovio rubbed his palms together and looked out the window of the office and across the land. It would one day belong to him and him only. There would be no sharing amongst the other packs. No more alliances and sharing power together. Instead there would be one leader, one king, one force to be reckoned with, and that would be him. Anyone who stood in the way would die, and Roovio would build a strong enough army to eventually put his plan into action.

  It would take time though. There were loose ends to tie, barriers to eliminate, packs who might dare to stand in his way. There were Trolytes, Voltek, Shay, Luddow, and Koa Polta to keep in line, and to not only out conquer, but overshadow any of their progress. That way the master would know who to put as the one leader of all. Roovio smirked. He couldn’t force this too quickly, yet he yearned to be more powerful than the gods, and that would happen. He needed to be patient, and slowly begin to minimize the
power of the packs who were most empowered, and who surrounded this land the closest. All while remaining hidden amongst the humans, who would eventually become his followers, well, his slaves, as well.

  He needed to put into action the plans he worked on. Start eliminating, and weakening the most powerful werepacks. The best way to do it would be to destroy the things they thought were most precious— their futures—and he knew exactly where to start.

  Crossing his arms in front of his chest and smirking, Roovio couldn’t help but to feel excited and enthusiastic. Plus, the best way to win over the people was to be in their presence as much as possible. Ultimately though, the best way to win over their support and allegiance, was to perhaps make them see how vulnerable they all were without him. He had a plan, and the other four Alphas and their packs would soon fall under his power and control, too. Especially as Roovio began to destroy them from within. They wouldn’t know what hit them. Self-destruction was definitely easily attained when wolves had their defenses down, and weren’t focused warriors like him.

  He chuckled, the low rumble sounding deep and masterful like him, and his wolf incisors grew with thoughts of battles, blood, and potential war. He would be the last, most powerful wolf standing. Building his army, hiding them amongst his enemies and those packs he would take over when the time came was imperative. Weaken their resolve, control their people, and make certain heirs to highest powers died. Without a strong bloodline, there was no true unity, and fear could be a powerful tool indeed.

  He heard the footsteps and turned to see Burdough and the young beautiful Gazelle. Her eyes were red from crying over her mate’s death still.

  He waved his arm. “Come to me sweet, Gazelle,” he said, and tried not to lick his lips as he sensed her fear of him and also her weakness. She would help ease his aches, as well as gain the obedience of the pack.

  * * * *

  “I’m coming, I’m coming!” Alexandra, “Alex” Morgan, called out as she hurried around the counter. Another order up, it was nonstop at the diner today. She wasn’t complaining though, she needed the money. Prom was only two weeks away, and she still owed fifty dollars on her dress at the local dress shop. She also planned on visiting her sister at college the week after prom before she left for college herself at Boston University on almost a full ride. She worked damn hard to get that scholarship and would need to get a part time job on campus or even off to help with additional costs, but at least the majority was paid for.

  She sighed as she handed out the food orders.

  “You all set for prom?” Lilly asked her as she placed down the two BLT sandwiches for her and her husband Corey.

  “Just about,” Alex said, and smiled.

  “Anything else I can get ya?”

  They both looked her over and smiled. Corey popped a fry into his mouth. “I can’t wait to see you in a dress, Alex. You ain’t never been the kind of girl to wear no frilly dresses and be all prim and proper.”

  “She’s eighteen, smart as a whip, and just because she’s always been tough and into martial arts, doesn’t mean she can’t be ladylike. She’s headed off to a big college, too. Going to make Grandma Margarete so happy. She’s been beaming for months,” Lilly said, and then gave Alex a wink.

  “Thank you, ma’am. I guess you’ll have to wait and see what I look like in a dress, Corey,” she said to him, and winked. He smiled and shook his head.

  “Kurtis Cape is one lucky man. You two have been friends forever,” Lilly said to her, and the bell chimed again indicating another order was up.

  “Yes, ma’am,” she replied.

  “Kurtis is a good young man. You two would make a nice couple,” Curtis added, and stared at her squinting.

  She hid her smile. She and Kurtis have been friends since nursery school. Best of friends and nothing more, although they did choose to have their first kiss with one another, and then realized it was gross. She smirked, and said, “I need to go get more orders. You two enjoy your lunch, I’ll be back to check on you shortly.” She then headed back to the kitchen.

  A few hours later, after the lunch crowd disappeared and the evening staff began to arrive, her cell phone rang. She saw it was her sister and answered the call.

  “Hey, Alyssa, what’s going on?”

  “Are you still at the diner?” she asked, sounding a little funny.

  “Yes, but finishing up. What’s going on? Is everything okay? You sound funny?”

  Her sister was silent and then she heard the sniffles.

  “What’s wrong?” Alex asked, and covered the phone and walked outside to the back of the diner.

  “Uhm, Galvan disappeared.”

  “What?”

  “He’s gone.”

  “I don’t understand. Disappeared like not ever returning? Like he was taken or something, or do you mean he broke up with you?”

  Her sister began to sob. “I don’t know actually. I hadn’t seen him in months, but we talked on the phone. He called a few times a week to check on me. He was on a job. You know he works in something military.”

  “You mentioned that, and not knowing specifically what he does or where he works doesn’t really give us helpful information. Maybe he’s on like a special assignment or something and he can’t talk to you?”

  “No, something is wrong. He came by yesterday.”

  “Yesterday? I thought you said you hadn’t seen him in months?”

  “Until yesterday when he showed up. There are things Alex that I didn’t explain to you and grandma. I wanted to wait as long as I could and figured I would explain it all when you came in two weeks.”

  “Explain what? You’re talking all over the place. Where is Galvin now?”

  “I need you to come get me.”

  “What?”

  “Tonight. Come get me. After you pick up your dress.”

  “You still have classes.”

  “I’ll handle them from online. Just come for me please. I’m scared. I need you guys. Please, Alexandra.”

  “Okay, okay, I’ll tell grandma and we will come. I’m heading out to go home now.”

  “Okay, and don’t tell anyone you’re coming for me please. Just be careful.”

  She ended the call and Alex had an odd feeling in her gut. There was definitely something going on, and she would have to tell grandma about the phone call. Their Grandma Margarete was a smart woman. She was strong and very into magical things. Being one with nature, a sort of medicine woman to many as she had so many different concoctions that healed people when they were sick. All of the things she made came from the land, or from things she made on the ranch. As a kid growing up it was annoying sometimes, especially if kids teased her about her grandma, but ultimately, she was proud of her and even knew a thing or two about medicinal formulas and such. Alexandra’s real love was in photography and illustration. Her work was recognized as amazing in the way she captured the raw authenticity of nature and people. That was what she was going to school for. Photography and journalism, with hopes to one day work for National Geographic, or something similar.

  She grabbed her things, her tips, and then said good-bye to everyone before hurrying out back to her car. She called grandma and told her about the phone call from Alyssa.

  “The spirits were right. Something has been brewing. Galvin left her unattended, unprotected, and without word?”

  “Uhm, she didn’t say, Grandma. I’m coming home now. We can hit the dress store before we go.”

  “No, come get me now. I have a feeling things are worse than Alyssa has let on.”

  Alyssa Morgan paced the small apartment off campus. She couldn’t get the uneasy feeling to go away, and when she went down to the small convenience store to grab a few things, she felt as if someone was watching her. It made her uneasy, and right now as she rubbed her round belly, she feared what could be coming next. Galvan acted so strangely today, and as if he might never see her again. She hadn’t told her grandma or sister
about the baby. It was completely unexpected and so strange, too, because she had used protection and was on birth control pills. It didn’t make sense. She and Gavan were together for months.

  In the last few months after learning she was pregnant he, went from being thrilled to being concerned about who would find out. He talked to her about leaving school and living with her grandmother and sister in the country. That he would visit when he could, but it would be smart to not keep in touch for a while in order to protect the baby. His words yesterday were odd as well as his plan. She had things to do, and she knew it was going to be tough raising a baby and finding work. But grandmother would help her, and so would the others in the community she lived in. She just didn’t want to do this without Galvin.

  She heard the knock on the door and gasped as she glanced at the darkness out the window, and then made her way to the door. She peeked through the peephole and saw that it was Alex and Grandma Margarete. Grandma was not going to be happy. In fact, she looked like she already knew. Something told Alyssa that things would be okay.

  She opened the door and their eyes roamed over her as Alex went to hug her then stopped. “No way,” she said, and gave a shrug of her shoulder as tears fell, but then Grandma ushered them inside.

  “You should have told me immediately. Where is Galvin now?” Grandma asked, not really reacting to the pregnant belly Alyssa was sporting.

  “I don’t know. He acted so strangely. He knows about the baby though. He was excited at first, and then the next thing I know he’s talking about me heading home, staying with you, and not seeing me in order to protect the baby. I didn’t, I mean, I don’t understand any of it and now I haven’t heard a word from him.”
