  Chapter 6

  “Now?” Denzel asked Zedock.

  “Stone said head out tomorrow night. They identified the ones who killed Gable and his team, plus other agents working undercover there. It was a mess, but it seems this guy, Kasmul, a businessman, aids terrorists like Volchen and they were both responsible for killing all those men. The thing is, Stone said the commander wants them alive if possible. They believe they have information that could be worth a lot to our government. Like other terrorist cells forming, and future plans of attack, as well. This is huge,” Zedock said.

  “We need to talk to Genesis. How are we going to handle that?” Mills said, and he looked and sounded somber.

  Zedock held their gazes. Freeman had his arms crossed in front of his chest. They had just left Genesis’s place, letting her get some rest for work tomorrow night.

  “I know we haven’t had much time to discuss this relationship and where we see it going. She loves us and we love her. This revenge we seek, this justice for Gable and his team, it can be our last mission. We aren’t getting any younger, and meeting Genesis, falling in love with her, has changed things. My recommendation is to make this our last mission before we retire from it all,” Zedock said.

  “Fuck yeah. I want out. I want a life with Genesis,” Mills said.

  “Me, too,” Freeman said.

  “Denzel?” Zedock asked him.

  “I want the same thing my brothers in arms want. We need to focus on this mission entirely though. We can’t think about Genesis, about missing her or getting back to her until we’re in the clear and the mission is complete.”

  “Agreed,” Zedock said, and they all agreed, and then sat down as they went over the information Stone was getting them, including some intel from an inside informant.

  “What happened to the informant they had somewhere around Texas? I thought they were supposed to have the deepest connection and information?” Denzel asked Zedock.

  “Stone said they weren’t willing to cooperate or get involved again. Apparently, they were deep undercover a couple of years back. Very resourceful.”

  “Damn, well I guess Stone’s people were able to get just as much useful information since they’re sending us in,” Denzel replied to Zedock.

  “We won’t be going in alone anyway. Stone wants us protected. He doesn’t want to lose more men to some kind of operation going wrong. He doesn’t trust the info a hundred percent, which means we need to be prepared for anything.”

  Genesis was going to head to the guys’ house to spend the day with them when her cell phone rang. She saw the private number and hesitated answering it. When she hit talk, she heard the voice and swallowed hard.

  “Hello, Genesis, it’s Seager.”

  “What’s going on?”

  “A lot, actually. We need your help.”

  “Nope, not involved with anything anymore. I told you that the last time you called, Seager.”

  “We got information confirming who killed Gable and his team.”

  “What?” she asked, instantly feeling her chest tighten and her heart ache.

  “It was Volchen and Kasmul. They were working an operation with some big-time terrorists, and Gable and the team were about to raid the place. They had them taken out. Slaughtered right fucking there, Genesis.”

  “Oh God. So what are you doing about it?”

  “A team is being deployed. Mercenaries, highly trained, are being debriefed. They’ll head out tomorrow.”

  “Jesus, do they know what they’re up against?”

  “We’re going by what little information we have. It’s why I’m calling you. Your insight could help.”

  “I’ve been out of the loop for two years.”

  “You still know secret entrances and ways to avoid being detected.”

  “Only if those haven’t changed. Kasmul and Volchen are smart like that.”

  “Anything you can provide will give them a better chance of surviving.”

  She thought about that. She did have some knowledge and perhaps something could aid those soldiers being sent in. “It wasn’t easy to penetrate Kasmul’s territory.”

  “Come on, Genesis. I can pass the information along to their commander.”

  “Fine, I can send you some things I remember but no promises to their accuracy. It’s been two years. After this, don’t call me again, unless it’s to tell me Kasmul and Volchen are dead.” She ended the call. She pulled out her laptop, then connected the secure wire so no one could trace her actions.

  Before she started to send the information, she texted the guys that she would be a few minutes longer. She focused on the soldiers, on keeping them alive, and helping them to avenge Gable’s murder. It was the least she could do for the man. He had been so special to her, and he and his team didn’t deserve to be killed. She didn’t think twice as she sent along what she could remember, and hoped it was enough to make their operation a success with no casualties, except for the bad guys.

  Tears filled her eyes. She couldn’t help it. She was scared. “When do you need to go? What kind of mission is it?” she asked Zedock.

  He held her in his arms. They had all just finished making love for the third time. She could tell that something was wrong.   “So it’s terrorist you’re going after?” she asked.

  “We can’t talk about it,” Zedock said to her.

  “Yes, they’re terrorists. We’ll do everything we can to get back to you, but we need to focus on this mission, Genesis. It’s going to be dangerous,” Mills said.

  “Mills, no information,” Zedock reprimanded him.

  “You don’t need to tell me anything. I get it. I know that knowing you’re mercenaries is a secret I’ll have to keep to myself. You can trust me to do that,” she said, but her heart raced something terrible. She was scared. She needed to find out more, but how could she? She couldn’t get involved or the government would want her to go back in. What could she tell them?

  “I don’t want you worrying about me. You focus on your mission, and know that I’ll be here waiting for you when you all return, safe and sound.”

  “We need you, Genesis. There was a rat in the department, and it turns out it was Seager. All the information you sent him in regards to the operation for those soldiers was a set up to help kill those men. Those soldiers are heading in and will die if we don’t give Kasmul something,” Commander Burbank.

  Genesis instantly felt like her heart fell to her gut. She was going to get her lovers killed. They were the team that was sent in. Oh God no. No. The tears fell. “What do you need? How can we save them?” she asked.

  “I don’t know, Genesis. But in less than twenty-four hours, those men are going to walk right into a setup.”

  “I’ll take care of it. I’ll be in touch.” Genesis ended the call. She stared at her phone and her heart ached. She felt ready to puke. She had to do something to save their lives. Who could she get to help her? Who would have access to doing what needed to be done?

  She pulled out her cell phone and looked up the information. She didn’t have much of a choice. She would give her life for Zedock, Freeman, Denzel, and Mills. She loved them with all her heart and nothing else mattered but keeping them alive.

  “Hello?”

  She held the phone to her ear and heard the voice.

  “I need your help.”

  “What’s wrong? What do you need?”

  “To divert a group of mercenaries going on a mission. I want them to live and get out before it’s too late.”

  “And I would do this how, and why?” Kent Mogen asked her.

  “Because you owe me big time, Kent.”

  “What will you do for me?”

  “Really?”

  “Yes, really. Like pulling something like this off, calling in to higher-ups that have the pull and authority to take action like this, costs a lot for me. You know I could get into trouble.”

  “With all those politicians and big shots in your corner, you’re telling me this will cost you? I don’t think so, Kent. You can get it done.”

  “Then you need to come to Washington. I’ll find out what I can and get them out of harm’s way on the down-low. Wait for my call. I’ll tell you when it’s done.”

  She ended the call and tears filled her eyes. Whatever this cost her, she would do it. As she sat there contemplating what would happen and if she would be able to save her lovers in time, Mogen called back.

  “Pack a bag. Drive to the location I send you. A guy by the name of Brew will be in a black Ford Explorer. He will take you to a private airport, and on the plane you’ll be debriefed.”

  “What are you talking about?”

  “Burbank wants you on scene at a secure location. There are men who work for Kasmul, searching for you in Texas. Genesis, Seager was a bigger rat than any of us knew. He gave them your location. You will be safe with us, and those soldiers you are protecting will be, as well, as long as you get out of here. You die, they die,” he told her.

  She couldn’t believe this was happening. That she may not ever see Zedock, Freeman, Denzel, and Mills again.

  “Are you listening to me, Genesis? You want those soldiers to live, then you need to get out of that house, that town, and do as I say. Bring your documents and passport. I don’t know the destination but out of the U.S. would be best and into a safe house. Now go. I’ll take care of things on this end.”

  He ended the call and she jumped up and ran for the bag she had packed for a quick escape. It sat in that closet for over a year here in Cherry Hill. This was it. Her new life was over. The men she loved she had to give up in order to save them. They would never know why she disappeared. Her gut clenched. This felt all wrong. She didn’t know why, but she grabbed her cell phone and hurried out of the house with her things and then got into her car and took off. She went over everything in her head, and she quickly texted Burbank, her commander, to confirm what Mogen was telling her.

  As she saw the Explorer, she got out and so did the guy. He looked around them and waved for her to hurry up. As she got closer, she confirmed his name was Brew, and got into the back of the Explorer where another man sat. Her cell phone buzzed. She glanced at it and read the words.

  I don’t know what you are talking about. Mogen hasn’t called me at all. Get to safety. Now!

  She put down the phone, but it was too late. “Initiate Plan B,” Brew said as he drove the Explorer. It was too late when she felt the prick to her neck. She slammed her forearm against the guy’s nose as the drugs hit her instantly. Darkness overtook her vision.

  “We’re in the vicinity. We wait until sundown and then we’ll move in on these coordinates,” Zedock told the team.

  They were dressed in full gear, hidden with two other groups of soldiers ready to infiltrate the compound where Volcher and a crew of several terrorist leaders were located. He wondered how the commander had gotten the information, and apparently it stemmed from that inside informant. As he went over information and the procedure, Zedock wanted a better guarantee for all of their safety, so he asked for additional aid both on the ground and in the sky. The location made that a simple request, and he was now coordinating what would surely be a tremendous success if it was pulled off accordingly, and no U.S. soldiers’ lives were lost in the process. He held tight, his men close by as he went over the route they would take, and how the other two teams would come from the surrounding area. As they took out security first, then moved into the compound and the estate itself, they would get assistance from armed forces in the sky as well as other gunpower.

  They were antsy but ready to win one for the good guys. When night fell upon them and the chanting at the compound grew louder, Zedock gave the command, and all teams moved in. His last thought was of Genesis, and a prayer that he and the team made it back home to her to start their new life and put all this danger and life-risking behind them, once and for all.

  “We got a huge fucking problem,” Burbank said to The Greek over the phone.

  “What do you mean a huge fucking problem? Tell me it doesn’t involve my men and this fucking mission they are initiating as we speak,” The Greek said to Burbank.

  “I can’t fucking figure it out, except that my team, my inside people, are telling me that one of our main guys somehow finagled this operation so it looks good for a senator to get reelected.”

  “What?”

  “There’s more. That agent, the woman who was my inside person for years inside of Kasmul’s world, gave the information I gave you to protect those men. Turns out your soldiers know her. They have a relationship with her.”

  “What the hell are you talking about?” The Greek asked.

  “The mis
sion was a setup. I can’t figure this shit out on my own. I don’t know who to trust now. They got my informant, my spy.”

  “You’re rambling to me and I can’t figure anything out if you don’t give me all you got. Those men are my first priority, Burbank. We lost Gable and the others.”

  “She knew Gable, too. I think that’s why she assisted with this operation and gave those coordinates and the information your men used to infiltrate Volchen’s estate. Whomever pulled this all off, did it for political reasons. They don’t give a fucking shit about my spy, your men, or who’ve they put at risk.”

  “Okay, I want every fucking detail, right now so I can use my sources to figure shit out,” The Greek commanded, and all hell broke loose as he waited for word of a successful mission and not an ambush that would kill over two dozen U.S. mercenaries.

  “Save the celebrating for later. Document the ones we killed in combat, and get those three into custody right now. Have them transported with team three for security. Get to the pick-up point,” Zedock said as he looked around them and made sure all the men were accounted for, and the others were dead or captured. It had been a success, thanks to that informant, otherwise they would have walked right into an assault on two of the teams. Whomever that informant was, he owed them big time. As they pulled all their teams together and got out of there before they were attacked by any other enemy soldiers, they headed to the pick-up point, and were in the air and heading to another secure location.

  “Commander Race, you got a satellite call coming in,” one of the pilots told him, and passed back the satellite phone.

  “Hello.”

  “Zedock, Stone here. We got a situation.”

  Chapter 7

  “You can thank me any time you want, Senator,” Kent Mogen said to him as they gathered around the pressroom. Word had gotten out about the mission and how the senator knew about it and helped with efforts to capture terrorist leaders planning to attack Americans. It had turned into a frenzy as the media caught wind of the story and ran with it.
