He covered it with his hand as he stepped closer. “I’ve had some things happen in my life,” she said. Both men narrowed their eyes at her. “I don’t intend to get into details, but this was a big step for me. I haven’t gone out on a date in a while, and well, I’m glad it was with the two of you. So, before we kill the good vibe, why don’t we go get some things and then enjoy that concert?”

  “I can accept that for now, but sweetie, if those things that happened are going to get in the way of progress, then you will be talking to us about them so we can work through them together,” Mills told her.

  “We’ll see, Mills.” She went to move her hand and he pulled her closer and kissed her again. She ran her hands along his shoulders as Freeman stepped in behind her and whispered against her ear and neck.

  “What are we doing?” Denzel asked Zedock.

  “We’re going to check out the concert and meet up with Mills and Freeman.”

  “She’s an attractive woman, and it appears she’s got Mills and Freeman talking some serious talk. Don’t you think we should help keep their minds clear?” Zedock said to him, and Denzel snorted.

  “Keep their minds clear, or feed our curiosity about who she is and what she has to offer?”

  Denzel was quiet. They hadn’t been in the states for two years. They were numb to a lot of things. To even this town, to any town, where people just went about their lives like other things didn’t exist. The violence, the evildoers, him and his brothers in arms had to deal with.

  “It’s nice around here, and friendly,” Zedock said as they walked from the parking lot to the center where the concert was. It was pretty packed there.

  “It is nice. Almost fairytale-like,” Denzel said, and Zedock snorted in agreement as a few women they walked past looked them over and smiled. They nodded toward them but kept walking. The sound of the music got louder and the large crowds of family and different people gathering around in the community was a shock to Denzel. Kids playing with their friends, dads tossing around footballs. “Jesus, it looks fucking fake.”

  Zedock shook his head and whispered, “No man, it’s real. We’ve been so caught up in our careers and dealing with scum bags wanting to destroy this right here for years. We protect and serve so people can live like this.”

  “That isn’t no bullshit, man. Fuck, I feel completely uncomfortable.”

  “Me, too.”

  Denzel stopped short and gave Zedock a slap to his arm then pointed. They both watched as Freeman and Mills stood next to Genesis right by their truck. Mills had his hand on her shoulder and Freeman had his hand on her waist, then leaned down and kissed her temple. She glanced up toward him, smiling up like some angel. The sight did something to Denzel and he felt like his throat closed up, and his heart reacted. “She looks gorgeous. Look at her body, those legs, and how she looks between them.”

  “I can’t. It’s too fucking much,” Denzel said, and looked away, turned around and almost feeling panicked, but Zedock turned too and cleared his throat.

  “Now we know why they texted, what they’re more than likely feeling. Do we take a chance, or do we run for cover?”

  “You’re asking me” You’re the fucking commander, what the fuck?”

  “I’ve never run from anything. You know that, but holy fuck, Denzel, did you feel something just watching them?”

  Denzel nodded but his teeth were clenched.

  “This could be nothing. Just an attraction that could lead to sex. Something we all haven’t engaged in in quite some time.”

  “My days of fucking women just to do it, or with no feelings is over. Maybe I need to head back.”

  “Hey, who’s to say it’s just about sex here, or that she’s even willing? We’re jumping the damn gun. We’re soldiers, fucking mercenaries no less. I think we can handle some sexy twenty-something bombshell, don’t you?” Zedock asked him. Denzel looked back and caught Mills’ eye. “Fuck,” he said, and ran his fingers through his hair. Freeman, Genesis, and Mills all looked right at them. “Now we have to go say hello at least,” Zedock said, and they headed toward them.

  Mills and Freeman shook their hands hello and then introduced Genesis.

  “You guys remember Genesis, right?” Mills asked and she smiled up at Zedock and Denzel.

  “Of course we do. How are you?” Zedock asked, and reached his hand out to shake hers.

  “Good, and you?”

  “Good,” Zedock said, and squinted at her as he looked her over.

  “How was the tour of town?” Denzel asked, and reached his hand out for her to shake. He noticed her face went flush and she swallowed hard. Their hands touched and he felt instantly attracted to her. By Freeman’s expression and Mills’ intense one, they were looking for a reaction. Denzel also felt like something went down between them all.

  “It was okay. I mean, I think we saw what we could,” she said.

  Freeman pulled her into his arms and slid his palm over her ass as she held onto his arms and stared up at him. “We got a little off track, but maybe found some nice private spots to explore,” he said, and then kissed her.

  As they took position around her and Mills, Denzel looked at her.
Genesis was striking, and the color of her hair was so jet black it shimmered in the sunlight. She had toned, muscular arms, indicating she worked out, and appeared athletic.   “What do you do when you aren’t working?” Denzel asked.

  She turned around and walked closer to the back of the truck to lean against it. “I do a lot of things.”

  “Like?” Zedock asked now, too.

  Freeman placed his hands on her hips and lifted her up to sit on the back of the tailgate to the truck. Mills reached into the cooler they bought. “Beer?” he asked them, and Zedock and Denzel nodded as Mills handed out beers, but handed Genesis a wine cooler. He opened it for her. She crossed her legs and they gathered around her. Zedock leaned against the side of the truck and watched her closely. Denzel took position on her left, Mills in front of her, and Freeman on the right.

  “Come on, where do you work out?” Freeman pushed.
