  “The master needs to be sure, Vipis. Can you guarantee that when their men move in and take Avi, that there won’t be any problems? Many of the other packs have lost their men, their power, because of the force these women have combined with their mates.”

  “It won’t be a problem this time. The wolves are trusted by them and mixed in, haven’t been detected. We only need a few of them because there are so many others that will remain hidden to be used in the future. Follow the directions I gave. Get her to drink the concoction, and it will be easy to trick her into going.”

  She saw the man pass over something that looked like a small vile. They wanted to take Avi. That other man was Vipis, a sorcerer. He wasn’t a good one, and he showed no allegiance to anyone, just whoever paid the most. She debated about interceding and perhaps killing them, but that wouldn’t be an option alone. More than likely they both had people with them. Who was that other man? She wondered, and as they parted ways, she made the decision to follow him. When they got to the clearing she sensed the other wolves, guards to the beginning of new territory. She sniffed the air, and then deciphered the scents. She still didn’t know who he was, but the men all bowed to him and he gave orders like a militant.

  “Yes, Corpius,” she heard one say. She needed to find out who he was and who this pack was, and she also needed to warn Avi.

  As she turned to the right with the intention of leaving she saw the group of men walking and knew she would get caught. She had to move closer to the buildings and perhaps even the entrance to see if she could find out more. Feeling trapped, she shifted into her human form, kept the shield over her scent so they couldn’t decipher what she was, and then walked in the small town, right outside of the gates to the pack territory. As she read the plaque on the wall, she saw the word Knoll. Something was definitely peculiar about this place, and finding out more would mean contacting her friends. She couldn’t make a call here. Anyone could be listening or see her as a stranger in town. She hurried past the village, pretended to be browsing for things and then made her way back to the woods. Could this be the pack that has been causing so much trouble?

  She thought of Rule, Temerec, and Law and decided that maybe she should call them and tell them what she found out and to warm Avi. She could be back in Texas in a matter of weeks. Then thoughts of finding Delia popped back into her head. She was caught between what she needed to do in order to avenge her parents’ death, something she had been trying to do for years now, or just move on and do things for herself that could make her happy.   “We will. We made a plan, as well.”

  “How long have you been on your own and without a pack?” she asked this woman Nancy. She sat there with two babies, no more than two years apart, and probably two or three years old.

  “Three years, miss,” she said to her, and Avi nodded. “And the father? Where is he?”

  Nancy looked down at the children and then back up. “Dead more than a year.”

  “So sorry to ask these questions, but we need to know things. So you belonged to what pack?”

  “Shay, and so you know, miss, they aren’t his,” she said, and then caressed the children’s hair and looked sad. Avi squinted. The woman leaned closer so the children wouldn’t hear.

  “My mate died trying to protect me from the Shay Alphas. I was taken to a special transfer station an
