  “I am being smart. I’m taking my time and enjoying their company. I surely don’t need Uncle Romando and his nephews trying to dissuade me from getting involved with the Fiorre brothers.”

  “Even if you found out that it was men who worked for them that killed your lover, Vender?”

  Gisella gasped and placed her hand over her heart as her jaw dropped. She shook her head. “That isn’t true. It isn’t.”

  “It is true. They didn’t make their money legit and all from their multiple security businesses. Go back five years. They’re businessmen in their thirties, and some college kid tries to push in on their territory and product the Fiorre family owns. How do you think they handled that kind of stupidity?”

  Gisella felt as if her heart dropped to her belly. “Romando has proof of this?”

  “If you need proof, then ask him to tell you about it himself. Mark my words. The safest place for you to be is with the Picatta brothers, not Fedarro and Collin Fiorre or any other men in that family.”

  Chapter 11

  “What do you mean she isn’t coming over? What’s going on?” Collin asked Lenox over the phone.

  “She said she isn’t feeling well. She said if you didn’t mind that she would see you tomorrow night.”

  “Tomorrow night? We’re on our way. Don’t tell her. We’ll handle it when we get there.” He ended the call.

  “She’s jealous and angry. Who the hell knows what that bitch Miranda told her today?” Collin raised his voice and looked at Fedarro.

  “You know that woman would stop at nothing to try to manipulate a situation to her advantage. She’s sore over the business that failed between her husband and us, as well as her try at seduction,” Fedarro stated straight-faced.

  “Fedarro, how can you be so calm about this? Gisella is probably hurting, feeling jealous,” Collin asked.

  “Trust is earned. This is a new relationship, and Gisella will learn that she can’t avoid us instead of talking things through and working things out. We don’t have time for games when we’re closing this deal, working on revamping the security personnel in the new hotel and the theater.”

  “And what about Gisella?”

  “We’re heading over there now. We’ll help her to understand the rules as we go. She’ll learn to accept them and to not be jealous or untrusting, especially since we need to learn the same thing when it comes to her and men who want her.”

  Collin exhaled. “I suppose you’re right. If this is going to work, then she needs to know that we care about her, will protect her, and rules must be followed.”

  “Exactly.”

  Gisella got out of the bathtub, dried off, and wrapped herself up in the fluffy red robe. All evening her thoughts were twisted but kept coming back to the same thing. She wanted to be with Fedarro and Collin. She didn’t think they were bad men or men who would betray or hurt her. Was it just because she had invested so much in them in such a short time? Was it because of the ménage sex they’d had, and how she had given them all of her and exposed the truth about her fears and how she remained celibate for nearly five years?

  The more she thought about what she had learned today from Miranda, the more she questioned the truth of it. The only way to know was to speak with Romando and figure things out. Fedarro and Collin hadn’t batted an eye when she’d mentioned Vendor except that he was a Picatta. Surely they would have told her if they were the ones who had issued an order to kill him.

  She shivered. She wasn’t stupid. Made men killed people who got in the way, who betrayed a trust, or for whatever reason they thought was good enough. Although she didn’t think Fedarro, Collin, or the others in their family she knew did anything like that. Certainly they made their money in many ways, including doing illegal things, but they were so established now, and somehow it didn’t matter.

  She exhaled. She missed them terribly, and she really didn’t like thinking that they’d had some sort of fling with Miranda. It made her think about other women who they had slept with or catered to. It made her feel sick. Those jealousy and angry feelings had made her stay home tonight and lie about not feeling well. Even that made her feel guilty, and she knew Fedarro and Collin were going to be angry.

  She brushed out her hair and thought about her choices. Perhaps Fedarro and Collin didn’t even know who Vender was, or what his name was, and had just issued an order. Maybe it was one of their cousins, not them, Romando was just being protective of her? Or he was trying to do whatever necessary to keep her away from Fedarro and Collin because he, too, wanted her to belong to his nephews. He had hinted about it in the past, and she’d always blown it off.

  Maybe she needed to pull back a little and set some of her ground rules for Fedarro and Collin, like no bodyguard when she was at work or with clients. There wasn’t a need for that.

  She wondered how Fedarro and Collin would receive her suggestions, and then she wished she hadn’t blown them off and lied about not feeling well. She felt guilty, worried, and confused, and then came the need to see them, to feel them hold her, and to figure out all the other things eventually. Obviously liking two men who may or may not have been the ones to issue an order to kill the first and only man she’d ever loved didn’t really matter so much. It was like her gut felt it wasn’t true. There was more to this, and she needed to be smart. If she was going to risk angering them or doing something completely against some sort of made-men protocol like ask them about a hit they ordered, then she sure as shit had better be ready to deal with the consequences, and she better have proof.

  She wouldn’t let this come between them, just as she wouldn’t let Miranda or any other women Fedarro and Collin had shared in their lives. Her gut clenched. They were worth it. She just needed time to learn to trust them fully. They were so powerful, wealthy, intimidating, and capable. As much as their abilities, connections, and professions scared her, they also were characteristics she was drawn to. She was a sucker for punishment, obviously, and now was alone and missing them.

  As Gisella finished, she turned off the lights and headed into her bedroom. She gasped, her heart pounding as she saw Collin and Fedarro standing by the front of her bed.

  “You don’t look sick,” Collin stated.

  She could tell by their narrowed eyes and their hands on their hips, making their jackets part and reveal their holsters and guns, that they were upset. She wouldn’t tell them about what Miranda had revealed—not now, not when she needed to know if it was true.

  “How did you get in here?” she asked.

  Fedarro’s expression didn’t change, but Collin’s did. He raised one of his eyebrows as if saying, “What are you stupid or something?” God, these men were beyond capable. They were resourceful and would stop at nothing to get to whomever they wanted to.

  “You don’t look sick. Why lie to us?” Fedarro asked.

  “I took a hot bath, and I feel a little better now. I didn’t think it was a big deal.” S
he lowered her eyes and attempted to walk past them and toward the living room. Fedarro had different plans. He took her hand and pulled her gently into his arms. He cupped her cheek, and Collin took her other hand. She glanced at Collin, but her focus was on Fedarro.

  “I hope you didn’t lie and blow us off tonight because of something Miranda Charles had to say. The woman has the tendency to lie and distort the truth to get whatever she is after.”

  “So you know I met with her today?”

  “Of course, and you shouldn’t be jealous of her,” Collin stated.

  “How about the brunette at the lunch meeting you had the other day that wanted to entertain you for the rest of the afternoon? Should I not be jealous of her, too?” she asked.

  Both of them seemed surprised.

  “How do you know about that?” Collin asked.

  She looked at him. “I have my sources just as you have yours.”

  Fedarro gripped her tighter and pulled her close. “Then you know we declined and told her to take a hike. What about you and Brad? Letting another man get close enough to touch you, never mind whisper his fantasies, is unacceptable.”

  Apparently Lenox had heard a lot more than he let on.

  “We were jealous and fuming mad when we heard what he said to you and how he touched you, but we accepted the way you handled things, and we didn’t call and make a scene. We didn’t bring it up. We would expect the same control and honesty from you as well,” Fedarro said to her.

  He was right. They were getting jealous over people and things that were in the past and no longer mattered. “I wasn’t expecting it to hurt so much Fedarro, Collin,” she said to them.

  “Hurt?” Collin asked. Fedarro looked down into her eyes.

  “To learn of a woman the two of you shared, protected maybe with your guards, or had sex with her at your penthouse in your bed. I didn’t expect that it would hurt, that I would get sick thinking of that as I met one. I guess I wasn’t prepared.”

  “First of all, we never slept with Miranda,” Fedarro stated and then reached for the tie on her robe.

  Her eyes widened, and Collin took off his jacket and removed his gun and holster. “You didn’t?”

  “No, Gisella. She’s been bent for years about a business deal that fell through between her husband and us, as well as her failed attempt at seducing us into bed. Neither worked, and she wished they had.”

  Fedarro pushed the robe open. He inhaled, his nostrils flared, and he stared at her. “Honesty is very important in any relationship, Gisella, but extremely important in ours. Your jealousy—your inability to talk to us, to be honest, and to face your insecurities—left us apart for more hours than needed. That’s unacceptable.”

  “I don’t think it’s coincidence.”

  “I’m fine and the meeting is almost over. Then I’ll head home to you.”

  “Home?” he texted back.

  She smiled. “Home.”

  “Important message?” Keller asked her.

  “Yes, very. So I think we have everything all set here. I know that you’re going to be quite pleased with your new building. The neighborhood has so much to offer, never mind accessibility to mass transit and the bus station. The restaurant, Chicatello’s, is superb, too,” she added and smiled at Mr. Grossman.

  “You’ve been wonderful, Gisella. I can’t believe that you’re leaving the agency. These men are going to miss you.”

  “Yes we sure are.” Keller smiled.

  “Well, it’s time to move on with my own real estate business and downsize, maybe enjoy life a little. I’m feeling burned out.”

  “Then a rest and a new adventure are necessary,” Mr. Grossman said.

  She noticed that Emanuel, Iglesias, and Uncle Romando were getting ready to leave. She glanced toward the doorway and saw Ziek there watching her and them.

  Keller and Andrew began to walk Mr. Grossman out. Emanuel, Iglesias, and Romando headed toward her as Ziek helped her with her coat.

  “Gisella,” Emanuel said and went to give her a kiss hello, but Ziek stepped in the way.

  “Can I help you?”

  She held onto Ziek’s arm. “It’s okay, Ziek. We’re leaving.”

  As they began to walk out of the restaurant and onto the busy street, Romando grabbed her arm. “You’re making a mistake. With the Fiorre men is not where you belong.”

  Ziek went to intervene when Emanuel stepped in the way.

  “We just want to talk to her. We’ve known her forever,” Romando said.

  She looked toward the SUV down a distance from the restaurant. It was a quiet street, but cars were parked everywhere. Obviously Lenox and Scotch couldn’t park closer. Lenox was heading their way. She pulled her arm from Romando’s.

  “I don’t want to hear the lies. I’m with Fedarro and Collin,” s
he said.

  The sounds of gunfire erupted. She gasped and saw the shooter and a second one with his gun drawn and firing at Emanuel, Iglesias, and Romando. She screamed, froze in place, and Ziek tackled her to the ground. She felt him jerk and saw he’d gotten shot, once in the leg and once in the shoulder. His gun fell to the ground, and she grabbed it as the man got closer. She turned and fired, shooting a guy in the arm and the chest. He jerked as the barrel of the gun pointed at her, but Lenox got to her in time and shot him.

  As people screamed and a car sped away, Gisella knew it was a hit. In shock, she looked around her. Lenox was screaming at her, asking if she was hit or hurt, and then pulling the gun from her shaking hands. She couldn’t speak and then turned and looked at Ziek. She saw the blood on his shoulder and on his leg.

  “Are you hurt, Gisella?” Lenox asked again.

  She shook her head, then pulled off her jacket, and pressed the material against Ziek’s shoulder. It wasn’t until it all started to sink in that she looked to the right and saw Emanuel on the ground bleeding, Iglesias holding his arm, and Romando lying in a pool of blood looking dead. Sirens blared, crowds formed around them, and she cried and held onto Ziek.

  “Don’t die on me please,” she said to him, crying.

  The man she had shot and killed lay on the ground.

  “Puentez. Definitely part of the Puentez gang. No, Fedarro. The police are pulling up now. Ambulance, too. We got her. We will. She saved Ziek’s life.”

  Lenox bent down with the phone to his ear, placed his hand on her shoulder, and squeezed.
